Intro to Ultimate

So, you fancy coming to play but don't know what you're getting yourself in for?  Most sites tend to start with an explanation of the game and rules, but we think you'll probably get the best 'feel' for the game by watching and playing.  Here's the watching...

Ultimate Video

That was sweet disc-action there!  However, if you can't even throw a disc, let alone think of throwing yourself around a large pitch laying down some big-D or laying-out on the O, then don't worry; we'll teach you all you need to get playing!

And for the playing?  Well come on down! Check out our training times here. A typical session will last a little under 2 hours, with a warm-up, work on throwing and catching skills, work on movement, and will finish up with a match.  If you're coming to an indoor session bring trainers, clothes you're happy running and jumping around in, and maybe a botttle of water.  If you're coming along to an outdoor session the same applies, but if you've already got studded shoes (like astro-turf boots, or football-boots) then wear those.

If you want to read a little more about how the game works check out the UK Ultimate Association and if you fancy seeing a bit more of what we look like, both on and off the Frisbee pitch, then check out our Facebook group (both can be found via the links menu to the left) or our photo album.

Lingo

Backhand :  the throw most beginners start with, where you put the hand that is holding the frisbee across your body and throw from the opposite side - e.g. a right-handed player would bring their right arm across to the left side of the body and throw from there.

Forehand :  where you throw the disc on the same side of your body as the hand you throw with (i.e. right side for a right-handed player).

Endzone :  the part of the frisbee pitch where a team can score.

Baseline :  the line that separates the end-zone from the main pitch.

Pull :  at the start of each point the two teams line up on their Baselines.  One team will throw the disc toward the other; this is the "pull".

Huck :  any style of throw that goes a long way.

Hammer/Knife :  two throws where you start with the disc behind your head and release it overhead up into the air.  A knife will stay vertical throughout it's motion.  A hammer will flip upside down and come down the 'wrong way up'.

Layout :  where one dives to catch the frisbee.

O/D :  Offence/Defence.

Dragons:  named because we were always competing for space with the American Football team, who were named the Knights..
